This study describes and analyses the design, implementation and results of the Management of the Vicuña Conservation and Sustainable Use project executed between 20 in the Catamarca province of Argentina in relation to (1) the scope and objectives of the applied legal regulations (2) the control of poaching and illegal fibre and (3) the distribution of benefits from free-range shearing populations and the Fiber Redistribution Program (FRP). The Vicuña Convention and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Wild Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) promotes sustainable use of the species focused on fibre production for the benefit of Andean communities, such as those inhabiting the Argentinean altiplano. The vicuña (the wild camelid Vicugna vicugna) has a successful history of population recovery. However, there is a consensus that genuine stakeholder participation has not yet been achieved. Though both bodies of publications identified similar challenges, each sheds a distinct light on social-environmental contexts and regions. International papers differ from national ones regarding spatial coverage, research foci, and the methods applied. Only 65 of those studies were published in indexed journals, while national outlets accounted for the other 55, most of them also peer-reviewed publications. The scoping literature review conducted found 120 publications that address stakeholder participation in decision-making and the economic benefits generated in Mexican BRs. This widely ignored body of grounded knowledge allows deeper insights when assessing participatory management of BRs, an imperative reflected in guiding principles such as Aichi Target 11. This review article addresses challenges in the management of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (BRs) by analyzing the value of research published in journals, chapters, and books that are not indexed by Web of Science or Scopus. Keywords: identity, power, biodiversity, conservation, protected areas, Mexico Identity in the Lacandon Rainforest, as in other regions impacted by this practice, is a tool in the political struggle. Because of this tension, the peasants build complex and fractured identities, in an iterative process, assuming different images as they struggle to reconcile their personal desires with the external plan to preserve the forest. In the Lacandon Rainforest, conservation comes at great cost to the local population but, at the same time, offers an opportunity to access monetary and political resources. The mobilization of identity has been a main strategy of the inhabitants of the Lacandon Community Zone and the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve for maintaining their access to natural resources and benefitting from conservation. In this article, I analyze how daily conservation discourse and practices create and recreate local identities through the reconfiguration of social relationships brought about by conservation encounters.
